Recently, I had a chance to sit down with a great new dentist in town, Shalom Fialkoff. While Shalom has been in Sun City for the last two years doing dentistry, he is new to the Scottsdale area. Shalom has joined with dentist David Lebowitz at his office at Tatum and Shea.
We like to interview dentists from around the valley so that you can learn more about them on a personal level, and about the changing dental industry.
Let’s get on with the interview!
Where were you born?
I was born in Manhattan, NY, lived in various places in New Jersey and grew up mainly on the East Coast. My wife and I moved out here a few years ago from New Jersey – where I attended Rutgers and Columbia Universities. My wife is finishing Veterinarian school at Midwestern University in Glendale. We absolutely love being in Arizona!
Do you have any unique dental tips for your patients?
Yes! I have two tips that I can think of off-hand. The first one is a useful reminder to floss. Most people forget to floss, as a reminder you should put dental flossers in multiple spots around your house! Keep them visible. Place them in the bathroom on the counter, on a shelf, in the shower, in front of the TV, in your car, in your purse. Everywhere you look you’ll see them and that will remind you to floss.
The second tip is for new parents. Research shows that the bacterial composition of new baby’s oral environments closely mimics their mothers. That’s because mothers are more “mouthy” with their babies and are the ones that transfer bacteria to their babies. Most bacteria in the mouth are good but some of them cause cavities. It is vital for new parents to maintain great oral hygiene around the time their child’s teeth are coming in because passing along good bacteria to young children may ensure a healthier mouth as they grow up.
Do you see any big changes for dentistry in the next 10 years?
3-D imaging technology is the future of dentistry. The use of cone beam technology is being used in more and more offices for many different functions. Currently we can take a diagnostic 3-D image of patients jaws to virtually plan, place and restore dental implants. 3-D technology is helping us plan what the final outcomes of restorative work will look like. It’s making it easier to complete root canals, and its even used in orthodontics. 3-D technology is making complex procedures more predictable. Its a very exciting technology.

What is your favorite thing about being a dentist?
For me, its getting to know and build long lasting relationships with my patients. Very frequently, the staff in the office has to “gently remind” me that I have other patients to see because we get caught up in an interesting conversation. Many of our patients have been coming to our office for between 10 and 30 years! Thats a great indication that we are doing something right.
What do your patients think of you? How do they feel when you see them?
It is my hope that my patients feel comfortable around me and that they feel included in dental options that I present to them. Our office focuses on performing the highest quality dental work and I always try to explain the reasoning behind my recommendations. My job is to help patients choose the one that is right for them!
